At FUNDA, we are dedicated to providing exceptional service to both parents and children. πŸ§’πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ While our staff aren’t legally required to administer medication, we recognize that offering this service is vital for the well-being of families. 🫢

We kindly ask for full cooperation from parents/carers to follow this policy to avoid any challenges for our team. πŸ™

🎯 Aim

The purpose of this policy is to:

βœ… Ensure medication is only administered with parental/carer authorization. πŸ“
βœ… Guarantee proper administration and storage of medication. πŸ§ŠπŸ’Ό
βœ… Maintain accurate records of permissions and administration. πŸ“–βœοΈ

Note: Only qualified childcare practitioners will administer medication. πŸŽ“πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ

πŸ“‹ Method

  1. Parental Permission:

    • The site leader ensures consent is obtained during booking/attendance. If parents can send this to us via email this would be useful. [email protected] βœοΈβœ…

  2. Daily Storage:

    • Medication is stored in a locked box, away from children. This excludes emergency treatment never stored overnight. It is returned to parents daily. πŸ πŸ’Š

πŸ“œ Medication Guidance

  • Staff will not administer the first dose. Parents must ensure their child has taken it beforehand to check for allergic reactions. 🫧❌

  • Parents/carers must fill out and sign a Medication Consent Form for each prescription. πŸ–‹οΈπŸ“‘

  • Medication must be clearly labeled with the child's name and dosage instructions. πŸ·οΈπŸ‘Ά

  • Staff can only administer medication for the time stated on the bottle unless a doctor’s letter is provided. πŸ©ΊπŸ“œ

  • Records will include:

    • Medication name, child’s name, date brought in, and date returned. πŸ“‹πŸ–ŠοΈ

  • Medication must not be left in children’s bags. πŸŽ’πŸš«

In case of refusal:

  • If a child spits out or refuses their medication, parents will be contacted immediately. πŸ“ž If unreachable, advice will be sought from a GP or pharmacist. πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈπŸ’‘

πŸ”„ Administering Medicine

Before administering medication, staff will:

  1. Check the Medication Consent Form and medicine leaflet. πŸ“–πŸ”Ž

  2. Wash hands and wear disposable gloves (and an apron if needed). 🧼🧀🩺

  3. Verify the child’s identity and medication with a witness. πŸ‘₯

Steps for administering:

  • Follow instructions carefully. πŸ“œ

  • Offer a drink if needed. πŸ₯€

  • Record details and have a witness countersign the form. βœοΈπŸ‘©β€πŸ’»

πŸ“‹ Auditing & Storage

  1. Medication Forms:

    • Management checks all forms daily and ensures forms are easily accessible in a designated folder. πŸ“πŸ—‚οΈ

  2. Storage:

    • All medication is stored out of children’s reach in sealed containers, as per storage instructions. β„οΈπŸ§³

    • Controlled Drugs: Parents must administer these at the setting as staff cannot store them. πŸš«πŸ’‰

    • Epi-Pens: Must be signed in daily using the Medication Form. The child cannot stay without their epi-pen. πŸ”‘πŸ’‰

    • Asthma Inhalers: Must be brought daily and stored in the β€œmedication” container/safe place. πŸ«πŸ’Ό

🩺 Individual Health Care Plans

Children with long-term health needs (e.g. asthma, allergies, diabetes):

  • A care plan is created after a meeting with the family before starting childcare. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘¦πŸ€

  • Risk assessments are completed, and care plans are reviewed every 6 months. πŸ—“οΈβœ…

At FUNDA, we take medication safety and children’s health seriously. Thank you for helping us ensure a safe and healthy environment for everyone! 🌟😊
